Cold morning; edge of the road, a tiny patch of ice in the ditch. Sunrise. Ice that grew overnight melts, leaving behind a mass of crystalline forms in the fine clay.

Days later, if the mud lies undisturbed, and dries slowly, the grooves made by the growing ice remain on the surface of mud chips that have detached from the underlying coarse sand layer.
