Video W.H. Calvin / Evolution of Human Minds

This video is a bit slow-paced for contemporary taste, but a nice presentation of a “thought” experiment that brings ideas in human evolution together with archaeology.

My disappointment is that “intellect” is consistently pegged to verbal language, and visual thinking isn’t even recognized; visual-spatial awareness is also ignored. I think that many of the “mysterious” gaps in our understanding of early human skill acquisition, deep learning from the environment, and directly from animals and other humans, was accomplished by visually copying behavior.

William H. Calvin, Ph.D. is an American theoretical neurophysiologist and professor at the University of Washington in Seattle.
